Greetings all from the scene of it all!
Take a gander at the attached flow chart which has our Rock Creek home waters currently flowing @ 1,600 cfs with a water temperature of 49 degrees. If you remember way back pre-runoff, now based on years of hands-on experience here, my target was to have our water flow at 1,500 cfs with water temps in the 50's. Well, as water flows have dropped from the mid-2,000's of cfs this past week, river levels have correspondingly dropped and, based on Dem Ones' first day of fishing yesterday, as soon as the flow settles down and river levels even out our fishing prospects in these here parts will only get better and better as each day passes.
I was on the water yesterday with the Ones, fishing the Bitterroot River with our Montana Matters Troubadour Shane Clouse, and, get this, over the past week the Root has dropped three feet in height and what was once fishable water last week is currently dry ground. This is not unusual, and, in fact, is an annual event such that once the rivers settle into their "summer mode" our fishing opportunities greatly increase. Yesterday we were "on the cusp" of that transition and, inasmuch no fish I have ever been around over the past three decades of my fly fishing every likes change (the are Capricornesqe, just like me!) we found fish but had to really work for them. As reported in last night's boat reports, our Ones each had to work a bit to average 20 fish per boat on their Day One, with big fish to be found as represented by a multiple and 18" and 19" trout of all varieties (rainbow, cutthroat, cuttbow, brown and bull) with the biggest catches of the day being John "SOS" Reimann's beauty of a 21 1/2" Bitterroot brown, capped only by rookie Rick "Da Bro" Arnao's 22" Blackfoot bulltrout, awarding each of them our first E-19 yellow hats...and it is only gonna get better, gang!!
So, after a full year of planning, Extravaganza 2019 is now a current and living reality and I can speak for each of the Ones that things here are truly "real as reported", and, in fact, spectatular!!
Best to all from the scene of it all,
RCR---<'///:><
